Master Machine Learning with Stanford’s Renowned Specialization

If you’re serious about grasping machine learning, Stanford’s Machine Learning Specialization” on Coursera (= 3 consecutive courses) is a fantastic start. This course is taught by Andrew Ng, co-founder of Coursera and AI pioneer. It offers an in-depth exploration of machine learning concepts and techniques.

You’ll learn the ins and outs of supervised learning, unsupervised learning, neural networks and deep learning frameworks. The course also covers practical implementations using Python and TensorFlow. It provides hands-on experience with real-world projects using actual datasets which builds a solid technical foundation.

Implementing algorithms from scratch gave me a profound understanding of how machines “learn” from data. It took away the mystery from complex concepts and made them more approachable.

Who It’s For: Anyone committed to invest some time to build a solid foundation in machine learning. This was the most challenging one for me here…

Price: After a 7-day free trial (specifics may change), it’s $49 per month on Coursera for the whole specialization.

Explore AI with “AI For Everyone” by Andrew Ng

For those new to AI, AI For Everyone” on Coursera also taught by Andrew Ng, offers a clear, jargon-free intro to AI. This course breaks down complex ideas without requiring any coding.

You’ll grasp core AI concepts, discover potential applications and understand AI’s impact across various industries. Andrew Ng’s teaching style makes AI accessible and relevant, even if you don’t have a technical background.

This one is for the “bigger picture”. Realizing how AI improves efficiency in fields from healthcare to finance opened my eyes to its widespread potential beyond the “tech industry”.

Who It’s For: Anyone looking to comprehend AI’s role today without diving into technical details. If you’re curious about AI but not ready for a multi-course specialization, this is for you.

Price: Course access for 6 months with certificate is available for $49.

Quickly Grasp AI Basics with Microsoft’s Free Training

Pressed for time but eager to learn? Microsoft’s Fundamental AI Concepts” on Microsoft Learn is a concise course that introduces the essentials of AI in ca. 1 hour. Developed by Microsoft’s AI team, this nugget fits perfectly into a busy schedule.

This course teaches you only the core AI principles, e.g. the different types of machine learning and neural networks. It covers real-world applications of this innovative tech in various domains as well as a responsible AI primer.

Isn’t it surprising how AI is already seamlessly integrated into everyday tools like search engines, email inboxes and virtual assistants? This realization made me appreciate the tech we often take for granted…

Who It’s For: Those needing a quick, straightforward introduction to AI fundamentals.

Price: Free of charge. Yay.

Learn Generative AI with Duke’s Comprehensive Course

If generative AI (GenAI) in particular piques your interest, Introduction to Generative AI” on Coursera is an excellent choice. This course is taught by Noah Gift, Alfredo Deza and Derek Wales from Duke University. It focuses on the fundamentals of this technology and its practical applications.

You’ll learn to apply GenAI for automation, develop AI systems yourself and improve outputs with prompt engineering. The course is like a practical lab where you get hands-on experience with tools like OpenAI’s DALL-E and Whisper models.

Experimenting with AI models firsthand expanded my understanding of AI’s (creative) capabilities. The instructors blend theory with practical insight, making complex concepts approachable and engaging.

Who It’s For: Those eager to explore the world of GenAI and start building their own AI-driven applications. If you’re ready to get your hands “dirty” with AI, this one is for you.

Price: Access to this course for 6 months (incl. certificate) is available at $49. (If you’re a frequent Coursera learner you can consider their $59/month Plus plan incl. this and many other courses.)

Lead with AI: Jeff Maggioncalda’s Guide for Business Innovators

For professionals looking to stay ahead of the curve, Navigating Generative AI for Leaders” on Coursera is a must. (Yep, I’m quite a “power user” of Coursera…). Taught by the former CEO of Coursera, this course enables leaders to integrate GenAI into their business strategies.

You’ll gain a practical overview of GenAI’s capabilities and limitations. The course teaches you how to use AI as a “thought partner” for strategy and decision-making. It shows you how to navigate ethical and legal considerations. It also features expert interviews (incl. from Robert Brunner – CIO of my alma mater UIUC) and real-world examples.

Understanding how to align AI initiatives with business goals and governance is key for driving meaningful innovation. This course provides us with the tools to do just that.

Who It’s For: Business professionals looking to incorporate (Gen)AI into their strategic planning (and willing to invest some afternoons).

Price: After a 7-day free trial (specifics may vary), this specialization is $49 per month on Coursera. (FYI: This one is also included in Coursera Plus.)

Get Started with GenAI Using Google’s Free Intro Course

If you’re looking for a quick intro to GenAI, Introduction to Generative AI” on Google Cloud is worth checking out. Featuring Google’s AI experts, this course provides a concise overview of the fundamentals of this sub-field of AI.

You’ll learn the key ideas of GenAI, its common use cases, responsible AI practices, basic prompting and more. You’ll also get a first taste of how to implement this technology in “the real world” with Google’s tech stack.

When I first learned how models like GPT generate content, it opened my eyes to new possibilities in productivity and creativity. Being from Google, it offers up-to-date information straight from industry leaders.

Who It’s For: Anyone who just wants to grasp the essentials of GenAI without a significant time commitment. Even with only an hour to spare

Price: Free of charge.

Wrap-up: Something for Everyone!

To me, this looks like a rich mix of options for every taste to get started today. In the future, I’ll compile more specialized lists, e.g. for experts or professionals in specific industries or for certain AI domains (e.g. agentic AI or robotics).

Also, check out my other curated AI resources. There you can find gems like this brilliant video playlist: IBM experts regularly post short “explainer videos” on various AI topics there. (Yes, you can also learn a lot without committing to any courses.)

Now, share your experiences with these or other courses in the comments or get in touch. Did I miss anything? What’s your favorite way to keep up with the fast-moving AI field? If this helped you, feel free to share this with another lifelong learner.

Cheers,
John
