Every day, AI is changing our world. It’s imperative to keep up with these trends to be an active player. But it can be hard facing an info flood and with a busy schedule…
In my professional and personal life, I sift the noise from the signal. These are 7 important updates for you this month:

The Dawn of the AI “Kill Switch”
Tech companies have agreed to add an AI ‘kill switch’, aiming to calm fears of out-of-control AI. This move aims to enable a quick shutdown of (generative) AI if it starts acting unexpectedly. This sounds good in theory. However, this solution also brings up concerns about reliability and the real effectiveness of such measures.
Will this switch always work as intended, or could it fail when most needed? This is a step towards making AI safer. However, it also reminds us that controlling powerful AI systems isn’t simple and straightforward. This development reflects the ongoing struggle to balance the benefits of AI with the need for proper controls and oversight.
GPT-4: Surpassing Human Intelligence in “Theory of Mind” Tasks
Imagine a future where AI, for example GPT-4, gets better at understanding human feelings, beliefs and goals, reaching human level. Research shows GPT-4 got significantly better at identifying complicated human thoughts and feelings, once thought to be unique to humans. But, we must keep in mind it’s not perfect. It does not feel real empathy (yet) and misses the small details in our behavior.
GPT-4’s progress suggests new ways AI could help in fields like mental health and customer service. However, there are still limitations to how deeply it can “get” or mimic the complexity of human feelings. We may need to adjust to living in a world where machines possess such skills.
Meet the Hacker Tool for Windows “Recall AI”
A new hacking tool has come out that targets information from the latest Windows AI, Recall AI. This situation shows the challenge of keeping data safe as technology gets better. We’re reminded to watch our online steps as AI, like Recall AI, becomes a bigger part of our lives.
This raises questions about how much AI should know about us and if it’s safe. The discourse on AI (fortunately) increasingly incorporates concerns over data privacy. This trend reflects the urgent need for us to strike a balance in the further development of this technology.
ChatGPT’s Impact on the Gig Economy
The data shows: ChatGPT’s emergence has changed the freelance market, making some tasks less in demand because they can be done by AI, like copywriting or customer support. However, this doesn’t mean all is lost for freelancers. It’s a chance to learn how to use GenAI to stand out and do even more interesting work.
For companies, AI can obviously save money and do many tasks quickly, but it’s also clear that creative and unique human skills are still valuable and needed in most jobs. This is particularly true – as highlighted in my other post – when it comes to fusing human and AI capabilities in a complementary way. Redefining the human role in the age of AI is not an easy but necessary task…
Klarna’s “Genius”: Slicing Marketing Costs with GenAI?
Klarna, a big name in payments and shopping, has made headlines for claiming to use artificial intelligence to slash its annual marketing expenses by an estimated $10 million. The firm claims to have achieved this by automating the customization of content and advertisements. This automation could reduce ad spending and make marketing efforts more successful.
Nonetheless, this approach raises concerns about its influence on creativity and job positions in marketing. While it hints at potential cost savings and operational efficiencies for companies, the true effects and advantages of integrating AI tech are not yet fully clear.
An AI Candidate for UK Parliament? It’s Happening!
An AI is now a candidate for a seat in the UK Parliament, a unique event mixing technology with politics. This is the first time something like this has happened. The AI promises to use data to address big issues, aiming to be impartial and without a political bias. However, this situation brings many questions about AI’s role in government, human representation and moral standards.
A similar initiative is now also starting in the US with “AIbraham Lincoln“. Overall, this is an interesting trend that opens discussions on how we view democracy and AI’s role in our decision-making.
Luma’s New AI for Cinematic Videos (& you can try it!)
A new tech tool called Luma’s Dream Machine has been released, making it easy to turn simple ideas into fascinating videos. It’s made for everyone, not just movie makers and it’s easy to use. You can now make short stories or bring your ideas to life without much work.
This tool gives us new ways to be creative and raises big questions for the world of entertainment. Now, anyone can become a storyteller and bring their creative visions to life in a new way. Check out this demo videos, give it a try and see what you can create!
Wrap-up: What a Month…
This was a month full of surprises. It’s crazy how quickly the landscape of (generative) AI keeps evolving and impacting every part of our lives. AIs running for political positions … “what a time to be alive”.
Let’s finish this monthly review with a dad joke: What is machine learning’s favorite dance? It’s the “algorithm.” Anyway, how do you stay up-2-date? Missed anything? See you next month in the same spot.
Cheers,
John
